Cancer touches nearly every life in some way—whether through a personal diagnosis, a loved one’s fight, or the ripple effects that follow. It’s a reality that’s both universal and deeply personal, and facing it can be overwhelming. Beyond the physical toll, cancer also takes a heavy mental and emotional one.
That’s where Imerman Angels steps in. Their one-on-one, peer-to-peer mentoring model connects someone just diagnosed (and/or their caregiver) with someone who’s already been there—same cancer type, similar life circumstances, and ready to listen. These conversations go beyond the medical advice from healthcare professionals and get into the practical: how to manage side effects, what questions to ask your doctor, how to talk to your kids, even which foods can help through treatment. With the world’s largest database of cancer patients and a volunteer pool of 17,000+ mentor angels, Imerman Angels matches thousands of fighters, survivors, and caregivers every year.
Below, Senior Operations Director Josh Kaufmann shares how the model works, why it matters, and where this movement is headed.
Can you tell us a little about your professional background and what led you to join Imerman Angels?
Josh: I’ve been in the nonprofit world for over 20 years—communications, fundraising, branding, all that good stuff. Both my parents are cancer thrivers, so when I learned about Imerman Angels’ mission, it just clicked. It was an opportunity to do meaningful work every single day.
Imerman Angels is known for its one-on-one cancer support model. What sets this approach apart?
Josh: It’s the personal nature of the match. We’re not just connecting people based on a cancer type—we look at age, gender, lifestyle, family situation, and more to find someone who truly understands what you’re going through. That level of shared experience creates trust, makes conversations more meaningful, and helps people feel less alone in a way that support groups or generic resources can’t.
Is there a story or moment from your time at Imerman Angels that’s stayed with you?
Josh: Too many to count. But one that stands out: our CEO’s twin brother had a rare blood cancer. He now lives in the Washington D.C. area and not only did we match him with someone who had the same cancer and same treatment plan, but his mentor also who grew up in the same Chicago neighborhood and is a Cubs fan (super important). It’s one of those small-world moments you don’t expect—realizing there’s someone out there who shares your rare experience. Without our registry, those connections probably wouldn’t happen, but here, we can make them in days.
Where do you see peer-to-peer cancer support heading in the next few years?
Josh: It’s only going to grow. The emotional side of cancer is just as critical as the physical. There's a lot of research connecting emotional wellness to physical outcomes. As that recognition spreads, more hospitals and even pharmaceutical companies will want to be part of it. I think we’re just at the tip of the iceberg.
How is Imerman Angels using marketing and outreach to connect with more people?
Josh: Right now we’re targeting healthcare systems and big cancer associations to get the word out. It’s a balancing act—reaching the people who need us while also building relationships that keep the program sustainable. We’ve been able to expand that reach with Multiview’s help, especially in hitting niche groups and medical conventions where our future partners are.
If you could share one thing you wish more people knew about Imerman Angels, what would it be?
Josh: That we exist. We’re here for patients, caregivers, and even “previvors” who think cancer might be in their future. And we’re free.
We hear the same thing all the time: I wish I’d called you sooner.
Imerman Angels fosters life-changing connections for people facing one of the most challenging moments of their lives. With every match, they’re proving that no one has to face cancer alone.
